I don't intend to start a debate here, but I think that no matter the director's fame and genius, the man admitted to 1) rape (and!) 2) of a child in 1978 and fled the country before his sentencing. There is a petition circulating that supports his release from Swiss custody, but the thought of people siding with a rapist, and especially many other prominent people in the film industry who've signed it, makes me SICK. I am disgusted by the arguments for his freedom. No. No one is above the law.

As I admire a great deal of you as artists, and from what little I know of you as internet inhabitants, I know you are human. I know you have morals. I know that many of you would never claim your art as a means of escape from a heinous crime. Please sign this petition and send it to as many people as you can fathom. I completely agree. When I first heard of it, I sort of didn't want to believe it. I thought to myself, well if it was consensual... Which I know doesn't excuse it, but I guess I was trying to reconcile myself to the idea of sex with a minor the same way a lot of people in Hollywood are. But then I read this article at Salon in which they described the victim's account of the rape, and... Good Lord. That poor kid! I mean, he drugged and forcefully raped a little girl. In what universe would people actually defend a man like that? He deserves to be drawn and quartered.

yeah, Rape is rape. She said no, even drugged. The fact that she was a minor makes it more appalling. Even in the 70's, the consensual age in California was 18, not 16 or 14 or 13. How, *how* can he be let off the hook?

I... I don't know... he has many houses throughout Europe, and the nations that harbored him knew why he had fled the US. I honestly don't know, except that perhaps they respected his art greater than they respected the seriousness of his crime?
